The Unicorn Brewery was established in 1873 by William Banks and closed in 1902 under the ownership of the Walkerville Brewery, when strict licensing laws spelt the end of many of South Australia's independent breweries.
Today the Unicorn lives again, offering three stellar ales - a Classic Pale Ale (5% Alc/Vol), a Low Carb Blonde (4.5% Alc/Vol)and a Miner's XXX Stout (6.2% Alc/Vol) with a number of exciting new beers to be released soon.
The beer is currently produced in Adelaide and Sydney under the watchful eye of master brewers, and Unicorn Brewery Management is assessing sites for building its own brewery. The decision to build will be based on commercial factors and will only take place once specified production volumes have been exceeded and Unicorn's brands have developed a strong foothold in the South Australian beer market.
In its heyday the Unicorn Brewery supplied beer to 25% of South Australia when the then operational Burra railway supplied beer to Mid-North country pubs and to pubs in Broken Hill. Unicorn Ale was enjoyed by thirsty miners, farm workers, pastoralists and hard working townsfolk.
In addition, the Unicorn Brewery is pleased to announce that a number of award winning Adelaide restaurants and hotels will supply its fine ales. Negotiations are under way to supply Unicorn Ale to other restaurants and hotels throughout Adelaide and South Australia, as well as selected liquor chains and outlets. A number of Victorian hotels and restaurants have also been approached, and expressed interest in supplying Unicorn Ales. Restaurants, hotels and other outlets in NSW, QLD and NT are being targeted.
On an operational basis, the Unicorn Brewery of today has its roots firmly entrenched in Burra. It occupies offices in the original buildings as it did 106 years ago, and will use the former Unicorn Brewery bluestone cellars, with 600m of underground storage space, for functions and events and perhaps one day for the brewing of Unicorn Ale.
The legacy of a once great South Australian brewery lives again and all at Unicorn Brewery are very excited about re-establishing business and returning the Unicorn to Burra.
Long live the Unicorn.
